Frequently asked. Frequently answered.

Medical cannabis is legal in the UK when prescribed by a specialist for a qualifying condition.

While patients will need a prescription, they are not required to get a medical cannabis “card” in the UK. Before patients can qualify for a medical cannabis prescription, they must consult with a specialist and show they have a diagnosed physical or mental health condition that traditional treatment approaches have failed to relieve.

It can take up to two weeks to complete your specialist consultation and receive your initial prescription. Prescription refills are typically completed within days, so patients can avoid gaps in treatment access.

The cost of medical cannabis includes £50 for your required specialist consultation and the cost of the product prescribed, which your specialist consultant will discuss during your initial assessment. Repeat prescriptions, follow-up appointments, and requests for support accessing your Summary Care Record can all affect the cost.

Your health insurance provider may cover the cost of an initial consultation in some circumstances, but not medical cannabis treatments or products.

Yes. Many patients prefer CBD, a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that doesn’t create the “high” often associated with THC. And some products designed for localized relief, like topical creams, are non-intoxicating due to how they are processed in the body.

Many medical cannabis products contain trace amounts of THC, and it is possible to test positive for THC even if you aren’t impaired. In some cases, THC can be detectable for days or even weeks after your last dose, depending on how long and how much you consumed. While CBD is not intoxicating and should not cause problems on testing, it is still possible that trace amounts of THC can cause a test to come back positive. As a result, it is generally recommended that you discuss your medical cannabis use with your employer and if need be, get support from your doctor or Union.

Some professions, like pilots or railway signallers, don’t allow any detectable THC, regardless of your status as a medical cannabis patient or when you last consumed.
